nueLocate

Description

NueLocate is a simple tool which monitors your external IP address. Every time the address changes, for example when you choose a new VPN server, nueLocate detects this, uses a geolocation library to find its location, then displays the time the IP changed, the city and the country.

(Only need a one-off location check? It’s probably easier to use a website like whatismyip.com.)

How to use:

  • Click Monitor to start, nueLocate displays the details of your current IP, then looks out for any changes.
  • Clicking Copy copies all or the currently displayed locations to the clipboard, in CSV format.
  • Clicking Clear clears the full location list.
  • Clicking Stop stops active monitoring.
  • Clicking Close closes nuePanel.

VPN tests:

  • Connect to multiple VPN servers and confirm the locations in your VPN client are approximate matches to the locations you see in nuePanel. Geolocation isn’t an exact science, and nuePanel’s reported city or even country will sometimes be wrong. If you don’t get the result you expected, verify it at a site like IPLocation.net before you email your VPN provider to complain.
  • Use nuePanel’s timestamps to calculate approximate connection times. Beware: these times can be out by a few seconds in extreme cases. If you’re using them for anything important, run multiple tests and take an average.
  • While you use your VPN, nuePanel should only ever display your VPN server IP addresses and locations. If you see your home IP and location, that means your system isn’t using the tunnel.
  • TESTING VPN KILL SWITCHES IS RISKY, AND IF THE CLIENT IS POORLY IMPLEMENTED, CAN BLOCK YOUR INTERNET ACCESS EVEN WHEN YOU CLOSE THE PROGRAM. Happy to take the risk? Connect to a VPN server, and try various ways of disrupting the connection (switching networks, going out of range of a wifi network and coming back, closing the connection manually, or turning your router off and on again). What you’re looking to see, is that nuePanel never displays your home IP address and location while the kill switch is active.
  • NOTE: NueLocate works by repeatedly retrieving your IP address from an external resource. This only uses a tiny amount of CPU time and network bandwidth, but it’s still best to stop monitoring (click Stop) or close the tool when it’s not required.

Be aware: right now, Chrome is warning that ‘nueLocate.zip is not commonly downloaded and may be dangerous.’ There’s no reason for concern– the file is entirely harmless. Chrome is being cautious because it hasn’t seen the file before, and hopefully, over time and with more downloads, that alert will disappear.
